Liverpool Retires Jota’s No. 20 Shirt in Historic Tribute
Liverpool Football Club has officially retired the number 20 shirt in honour of Diogo Jota, following his tragic death alongside his brother, André.
The decision, announced on Friday, marks the first time in the club’s storied history that a squad number has been permanently retired.
The club confirmed that the tribute was made in close consultation with Jota’s wife, Rute, and his family. In an emotional statement, Liverpool said Jota “wore [the number] with pride and distinction, leading us to countless victories in the process and Diogo Jota will forever be Liverpool Football Club’s number 20.
The retirement of the shirt number will be observed across all levels of the club, including LFC Women and the Academy.
The club described the gesture as “a unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person.”
Michael Edwards, FSG’s CEO of Football, emphasized the significance of the decision:
“As a club, we were all acutely aware of the sentiment of our supporters and we felt exactly the same way. It was vitally important to us to involve Diogo’s wife, Rute, and his family in the decision and to ensure they were the first to know of our intention.
By retiring this squad number, we are making it eternal and therefore never to be forgotten.”
Jota, who signed with Liverpool in 2020, quickly became a vital player under Jürgen Klopp, known for his sharp instincts, relentless work ethic, and genuine connection with fans. His legacy now lives on as the number 20 shirt is enshrined forever at Anfield.
