U.S. Clarifies Reasons Behind Reduction in Visa Validity for Nigerians

The United States Mission in Nigeria has clarified the recent decision to reduce the validity period of most nonimmigrant U.S. visas issued to Nigerians and citizens of some other countries. In a statement released on social media, the mission addressed growing misconceptions, emphasizing that the move is not linked to Nigeria’s policies or foreign affiliations.

According to the U.S. Mission, the reduction in visa validity is not a response to any country’s stance on third-country deportees, introduction of e-visa systems, or membership in international groups such as BRICS. Rather, it is part of a broader, ongoing global review aimed at improving the security and efficiency of the U.S. immigration system.

“The reduction in validity is part of an ongoing global review of the use of U.S. visas by other countries using technical and security benchmarks to safeguard U.S. immigration systems,” the statement read.

The Mission reiterated its commitment to maintaining strong relations with Nigeria and collaborating with Nigerian authorities to ensure both countries meet necessary benchmarks for safe and lawful travel.

“We value our longstanding partnership with Nigeria and remain committed to working closely with the Nigerian public and government officials,” the statement concluded.
