Shettima Reaffirms Nigeria’s Commitment to Nuclear Test Ban
Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering stance on the global ban on nuclear weapons testing, declaring that there will be no going back on the country’s commitment to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT).
Speaking at the Presidential Villa in Abuja during a courtesy visit by a delegation from the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), Shettima stressed that Nigeria remains a firm advocate of global nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.
The CTBTO delegation was led by its Executive Secretary, Dr. Robert Floyd, who praised Nigeria’s consistent support for nuclear disarmament and its early ratification of the CTBT. Dr. Floyd described Nigeria as a key partner in Africa, noting that the country’s continued support is crucial to advancing the goals of the treaty on the continent and globally.
Vice President Shettima, in his remarks, highlighted the importance of a nuclear-weapon-free world, warning of the catastrophic consequences of nuclear testing and proliferation. He stated that Nigeria would continue to uphold its obligations under the CTBT and work with other nations to promote peace, security, and sustainable development.
“Nigeria’s position on nuclear testing is clear and unwavering,” Shettima said. “We are committed to a world without nuclear weapons, and we believe the CTBT plays a vital role in ensuring international peace and security.”
He also emphasized the need for strengthened global cooperation and capacity building to support developing nations in meeting their treaty obligations.
The visit comes as part of the CTBTO’s ongoing global engagement efforts to encourage broader implementation and eventual universalization of the CTBT, which has now been signed by 187 countries and ratified by 178, including Nigeria.
However, the treaty has not yet entered into full legal force due to pending ratifications by a few key states.
Nigeria remains a vocal advocate for its full implementation and has continued to support the organization’s verification and monitoring mechanisms.
