Residents Cry Out for Help as Flood Devastates Ondo Communities

Heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding in several communities in Ondo State, affecting Owo, Okitipupa, Ilaje, and Ese Odo Local Government Areas.

The floodwaters destroyed buildings, submerged bridges, and damaged properties worth millions of naira in Uso, Ayeka, Ikoya, Igbodigo, Igodan, and Igbotako.

Residents, who lost valuables such as electronics, clothing, and furniture, are now seeking assistance from the state government to rebuild their lives.

According to Joshua Jemiloni, a victim in Okitipupa, the flooding was caused by erosion and blocked drainage channels, which were previously dredged but have since been clogged with debris.

Community leaders, including Lawrence Awanebi from Igbodigo, are calling on the government to provide urgent assistance to those rendered homeless by the flood. Awanebi emphasized the need for government support to help residents recover from the devastating impact of the flood.

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has pledged to rehabilitate flood-prone areas and provide support for victims. He visited affected areas, assessing the damage and offering immediate intervention.

The governor emphasized the importance of avoiding practices that contribute to flooding, such as blocking drainage channels with waste.

The state government has commenced initiatives to reduce the impact of floods and other natural disasters. These initiatives include dredging waterways and enforcing environmental sanitation laws to prevent future occurrences.

The Commissioner for Environment, Niyi Oseni, led a team to inspect affected areas and assess the damage. The government has promised to provide relief to affected residents and work towards finding long-term solutions to prevent future flooding.
