More Governors Back Tinubu as Opposition Coalition Falters, Alleges Reno Omokri

Political commentator and former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has weighed in on the state of Nigeria’s political alliances ahead of the 2027 elections, asserting that the much-touted opposition coalition is faltering as more governors align with President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Omokri, in a post shared on social media, dismissed claims of a growing opposition alliance, stating that not a single state governor has joined the so-called coalition. Instead, he claimed that governors from various parties are rallying behind Tinubu due to what he described as the president’s “result-oriented leadership.”

“Not even one governor has joined the coalition,” Omokri wrote. “Rather, opposition governors are falling over themselves to join Tinubu’s result-oriented team.”

He pointed to the presence of Nasir el-Rufai’s son at a pro-Tinubu event as further evidence of growing support, contrasting it with Peter Obi’s son, whom he claimed is absent from political affairs and “unconcerned about his father’s ambition.” He compared both to Seyi Tinubu, the president’s son, whom he praised for being consistently supportive of his father.

“If your own son, who knows you best, cannot be bothered to be with you, why should others join you?” he questioned.

Omokri also argued that under President Tinubu, federal allocations to states have doubled, making it easier for governors to pay salaries, reduce debt, and fund infrastructure. He added that the newly signed Tax Reform Bills would inject even more funds into state treasuries.

“And you are asking them to leave all of that and follow Nasir el-Rufai, the Butcher of Kaduna, who almost drowned Kaduna in debt?” he wrote, referencing a corruption report by the Kaduna State House of Assembly that allegedly indicted the former governor.

He didn’t spare Labour Party’s Peter Obi either, accusing him of corruption and claiming that as governor of Anambra, Obi failed to build any schools or universities, opting instead to keep state funds in his bank for personal gain.

Omokri listed states like Edo, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa as already being in support of President Tinubu, with more reportedly negotiating to come on board.

“It is looking more like the supposed coalition is actually a collision. And what are they colliding with? Failure, of course,” he concluded.
