David Mark Resigns From PDP, Joins Opposition Coalition as Interim ADC Chairman

Former Senate President David Mark has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and officially joined a new opposition coalition seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

His resignation marks the end of a decades-long relationship with the PDP and signals a major shift in Nigeria’s opposition politics.

In a letter made public on Friday, Mark expressed his dissatisfaction with the PDP, citing persistent leadership crises, a loss of ideological direction, and internal divisions.

He stated that the party no longer reflects the values he once stood for, saying it has become “a shadow of its former self.”

Shortly after his resignation, David Mark was appointed Interim National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which has now been adopted as the platform for the newly formed opposition coalition. The coalition, which includes notable political figures such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, Rauf Aregbesola, and Rotimi Amaechi, is being positioned as a united front to unseat the APC in the next general elections.

Speaking at a meeting in Abuja, Mark said the coalition was created to rescue Nigeria’s democracy and restore purposeful leadership. He emphasized the need for unity among opposition forces and called for a new political culture based on accountability, national interest, and service to the people.

“We are not just forming another party. This is a movement to save Nigeria. The current political system is failing the people, and we must act before it is too late,” Mark said.

The ADC’s role as the new face of the opposition is part of a broader realignment within Nigeria’s political landscape. As interim chairman, Mark is expected to oversee the restructuring and expansion of the party ahead of the 2027 elections. The coalition has begun reaching out to various interest groups, civil society, and disgruntled party members from across the country.

The APC has reacted to the development with skepticism, describing the coalition as a collection of political opportunists. In a statement, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka dismissed the group’s chances, calling it “an alliance of personal ambitions with no unifying vision.”

Despite the APC’s reaction, political analysts have noted that David Mark’s defection could lend credibility and organization to the fragmented opposition. His track record as a former military officer, experienced lawmaker, and respected national figure may serve as a stabilizing force within the emerging alliance.

With the 2027 elections on the horizon, the opposition coalition says it will continue consultations across the six geopolitical zones, unveil its roadmap, and present a joint presidential ticket. The coming months will determine whether the coalition can maintain its unity and offer a viable challenge to the APC-led government.
