Enugu Police Crack Down on Violent Masquerades

The Enugu State Police Command has taken swift action against individuals involved in a violent masquerade attack on innocent residents in Nsukka.

Three suspects have been apprehended in connection with the incident, which was captured on video and widely shared on social media.

According to police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe, the suspects, along with others still at large, exploited the Oriokpa Masquerade celebration to assault several people, causing serious injuries.

One victim required hospitalization due to the severity of their injuries.

The police operation, carried out in collaboration with community members, led to the arrest of the suspects on June 23, 2025. State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Giwa, has ordered a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.

While acknowledging the cultural significance of masquerade celebrations, CP Giwa condemned the actions of those who use these events as a cover for criminal activities. He has warned against such behavior and assured the public that all perpetrators will face the consequences of their actions.

The police command’s prompt response and determination to bring the culprits to justice have been welcomed by the community, who are eager to see an end to such violent incidents.
