15 Colleges of Education Get Approval to Award Bachelor’s Degree

The Federal Government has launched a groundbreaking initiative to implement bachelor’s degree programs in 15 Federal Colleges of Education across the country. This development is a direct result of President Bola Tinubu’s recent approval of a landmark legislation, enabling these institutions to confer both the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and Bachelor’s Degrees in Education.
At a recent sensitization program in Abuja, the Federal Ministry of Education’s leadership highlighted the dual certification model’s potential to revolutionize teacher education and address declining enrollment. The government has also announced plans to establish more colleges, increasing access and opportunities for prospective students.
To ensure the success of this initiative, a review of the NCE Minimum Standards is underway, and the National Commission for Colleges of Education is intensifying monitoring and evaluation efforts. Admissions for the dual-mode programs, which will include both NCE and bachelor’s degree tracks, are set to commence in the 2025-2026 academic session.
Education stakeholders are optimistic that this development will not only boost enrollment but also enhance the quality of teacher training, equipping educators to effectively manage modern classroom challenges. The government has also assured that efforts are being made to improve the welfare of lecturers through various initiatives.
