Dissolve our Marriage, My Husband is Irresponsible, Wife Prays Court

Sherifat Bamidele, has approached an Area Court in Ilorin, seeking a divorce from her husband, Suleiman Popoola, due to his alleged irresponsible behavior.

Bamidele told the court that she married Popoola in March 2024, in accordance with Islamic rites, but has since become disenchanted with his lack of financial support and responsibility.

According to Bamidele, her husband has consistently failed to provide for her and her child, who she brought into the marriage.

She alleged that she has been shouldering the entire financial burden of the household, including paying for rent, food, and maintenance, as well as taking care of her child’s needs.

Bamidele expressed her frustration and exhaustion with the situation, stating that she is tired of living this way and wants a divorce.

She pleaded with the court to grant her request, citing her husband’s irresponsibility as the primary reason for seeking a dissolution of their marriage.

The trial Judge, Mr. Toyin Aluko, listened to Bamidele’s testimony and adjourned the case until August 12, for further mention.

This means that the court will reconvene on the specified date to hear more evidence and potentially make a ruling on the divorce petition.

It is worth noting that Islamic law, which governs the marriage in this case, has specific provisions and requirements for divorce.

The court will need to consider these laws and regulations when making its decision.

The case highlights the importance of financial responsibility and support in a marriage. Many marriages struggle with issues of financial instability, and it is not uncommon for one partner to bear the bulk of the financial burden.

However, when this becomes a persistent and unaddressed issue, it can lead to feelings of resentment and frustration, as seen in Bamidele’s case.
