2027: Only Tinubu Can Choose His Running Mate, Says APC Chief
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Salihu Lukman, has stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu alone has the constitutional right to choose his running mate if he emerges as the party’s flagbearer in the 2027 presidential election.
Lukman made the declaration while addressing ongoing speculations within political circles regarding potential vice-presidential candidates and suggestions that the APC leadership may influence Tinubu’s choice.
“Only the presidential candidate emerges, and it is entirely his prerogative to choose a running mate — after he becomes the flagbearer,” Lukman said. “Even though the party and stakeholders may be consulted, constitutionally, it is solely the candidate’s right.”
His statement comes as political discussions around the 2027 election begin to gain momentum, with some interest groups reportedly lobbying for influence in the selection of a future running mate.
The APC is yet to officially announce its presidential primary timetable, but internal consultations and alignments are already underway.
Lukman emphasized that both the Nigerian Constitution and long-standing political tradition place the responsibility of selecting a running mate squarely in the hands of the presidential candidate.
He urged party members and stakeholders to respect that process and refrain from creating tension or preempting decisions.
“This is not a matter for speculation or premature pressure. The process must be allowed to take its natural course, and when the time comes, the flagbearer will make his choice in the interest of the party and the nation,” he added.
