Diri Calls for Action to Combat Ocean Rise, Coastal Erosion

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has called for joint action to combat the growing threat of ocean rise and coastal erosion affecting communities in the state and the wider Niger Delta region. Speaking at a panel session on “Multi-Level Governance of Coastal Cities and Regions,” Governor Diri emphasized the need for collaborative governance to address the escalating crisis.

The governor highlighted the vulnerability of Bayelsa State, noting that 70% of its landmass is waterlogged and bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on three sides.

He cited the example of Odioama community, where over 250 buildings have been submerged due to tidal incursions over the past decade.

Governor Diri urged the federal government and international community to provide support to Bayelsa State in its efforts to mitigate the impact of ocean rise and coastal erosion.

He also emphasized the need for access to climate funds to support adaptation and resilience-building initiatives at the grassroots level.

The governor’s call to action underscores the urgent need for collective action to address the devastating effects of climate change on coastal communities in Nigeria.
