Former Abia Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, Reveals He Financed State with Personal Funds, Suffered Business Losses
Former Abia State Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, has disclosed that he spent his personal funds to govern the state during his tenure from 1999 to 2007.
Kalu, who is currently the Senator representing Abia North, made this statement on Channels Television’s Politics Today program on Monday.
According to Kalu, his experience in politics has been “dangerous” to his business interests, as many of his companies were sealed by the Federal Government during his time as governor.
He claimed that he never benefited financially from his position as governor, but instead, lost a significant amount of money.
“I spent my own money being governor, like I am spending my money today being a Senator. I used to finance the state, that is the truth. I never benefited from anything being governor, rather, I lost a lot of money. The Federal Government took a lot of my businesses. So, politics has been very dangerous to me,” Kalu said.
Kalu’s statement has sparked interest and debate about the financial sacrifices made by some politicians in Nigeria. The former governor’s admission that he used his personal funds to finance the state’s activities raises questions about the management of public funds and the role of politicians in supporting state development.
As a senator, Kalu claims to be continuing his trend of using personal funds to support his work, highlighting the challenges faced by politicians who invest their own resources in public service.
His comments have sparked a conversation about the need for greater transparency and accountability in governance, as well as the importance of protecting the business interests of politicians who serve the public.
