Tragedy as Car Plows into Celebrating Liverpool Fans, Multiple Injuries Reported
A joyous occasion turned into chaos on Monday when a vehicle deliberately drove into a crowd of fans celebrating Liverpool’s Premier League title victory, leaving several people injured.
The incident occurred just minutes after the team’s victory parade had passed by on Water Street, where tens of thousands of supporters had gathered to cheer on their team.
Eyewitnesses, including Harry Rashid, 48, from Solihull, described the scene as “horrible” and “extremely fast.”
Rashid, who was at the parade with his wife and two young daughters, recounted hearing the sound of people being knocked off the bonnet of the car, followed by the bumps as the vehicle continued to move over the crowd.
Other witnesses reported hearing screams and seeing an angry crowd surround the vehicle before police arrived to take control of the situation.
The driver, identified as a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area, was arrested and is currently being held for questioning.
Merseyside Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are urging the public not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding the collision.
“Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision,” a spokesperson said.
Emergency services, including ambulances and a fire engine, were quickly dispatched to the scene to treat the injured.
The North West Ambulance Service stated that their crews were “assessing the situation” and working to ensure that those affected receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the incident, describing the scenes in Liverpool as “appalling.”
He expressed his thoughts and prayers for those injured or affected and praised the swift response of the police and emergency services.
The incident marred what was otherwise a celebratory day for Liverpool fans, who had gathered in their thousands to mark the team’s record-equalling 20th English top-flight title.
Star players Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk had led the festivities alongside their teammates on the top deck of the bus, which had taken four hours to cover the 10-mile route.
The club’s history has been marked by tragedy, including the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, which claimed the lives of 97 fans, and the Heysel Stadium disaster in 1985, which resulted in the deaths of 39 mainly Italian fans.
The latest incident has left the city in shock, with the club releasing a statement expressing their thoughts and prayers for those affected.
