2027: Southwest PDP Must Ensure Makinde Gets Presidential Ticket, Canvasses Support Group
A political support group has called on the Southwest chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to unite and ensure that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, emerges as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The group, under the banner of Democratic Renewal Vanguard (DRV), made the call during a press briefing held in Ibadan on Friday.
According to the group, Governor Makinde possesses the leadership qualities, political vision, and national appeal required to reposition the PDP and offer credible leadership to Nigerians.
Speaking on behalf of the group, its National Coordinator, Comrade Bamidele Ogunbiyi, said the time has come for the Southwest PDP to play a more decisive role in shaping the party’s future and providing Nigeria with a capable, tested leader.
“In 2027, the PDP must look toward the Southwest, and Governor Seyi Makinde stands out as the most credible and competent figure for the presidential ticket.
“Makinde has distinguished himself with transformational governance in Oyo State and has shown maturity and loyalty to the party through various phases of internal challenges,” Ogunbiyi stated.
The group noted that Makinde’s emergence as a presidential candidate would not only strengthen the PDP in the Southwest but also attract a broad base of support from youths, technocrats, and progressives across the country.
They also urged the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) to consider zoning the 2027 presidential ticket to the Southwest in the interest of equity, inclusion, and strategic advantage.
Although Governor Makinde has not publicly declared interest in the 2027 presidential race, political observers say his growing national profile and role within the PDP hierarchy place him in strong contention for higher office.
The group concluded by calling on PDP stakeholders, especially governors, former leaders, and party elders, to begin early consultations and back a unified candidate from the Southwest in the interest of party unity and national stability.
The PDP is expected to announce its zoning framework and timetable for primaries in the latter part of 2026.
