Nigerian Footballer Hospitalised After Head Kick in Spain

Nigerian midfielder, Quadri Liameed was knocked unconscious after being kicked in the head during a Spanish second-division match between his club, Sabadell, and Albacete on Saturday night.

The incident occurred in the 42nd minute at the Carlos Belmonte Stadium. Albacete forward José Corpas attempted a volley for a loose ball while Liameed went for a header, with Corpas’ boot catching the 24-year-old Nigerian directly in the head.

Liameed collapsed immediately and briefly lost consciousness, prompting medical personnel from both clubs to rush onto the pitch. The game was halted for about nine minutes while he was attended to.

He was fitted with a neck brace, carried off on a stretcher and transported by ambulance that entered the pitch to Hospital Quirón Santa Cristina for medical examination. Referee Andrés Fuentes Molina showed Corpas a straight red card for the dangerous challenge.

Sabadell later confirmed that Liameed regained consciousness and was undergoing medical examinations, with initial test results described as positive. The club activated the concussion protocol and brought on Pere Pons as his replacement.

In an update posted on its X handle on November 1, Sabadell announced that the former Nigeria U-20 midfielder had been discharged from hospital after all tests came out well. The club said he would return to Sabadell that night by car, accompanied by a medical staff member.

Despite playing with 10 men after the dismissal, Albacete secured a 2-1 victory. Liameed’s father, Hajji Gafar, confirmed his son is now in stable condition and is expected to undergo further concussion tests, while Corpas could face a ban of between four and 12 matches under the Spanish disciplinary code if serious injury is established.

The incident comes just days before Spanish football was thrown into mourning following the death of Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, who suffered cardiac arrest after a collision in another Segunda División game, raising fresh concerns over player safety in the league.
