Makinde Commissions Nollywood Star, Sola Sobowale’s Ibadan Elderly Care Home
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Tuesday commissioned Joseph and Esther Homes, a residential care facility for older adults established in Ibadan by veteran Nollywood actress Sola Sobowale.
The ceremony took place at the facility in the Akobo area of the Oyo State capital. Dignitaries, guests and well-wishers attended, and the event was streamed live on Sobowale’s Instagram page and YouTube channel.
The home is named after the actress’s parents, Joseph and Esther Olagookun. It operates under the tagline “Live Well, Age Well, Thrive Together” and is presented as a place where senior citizens can live independently while receiving professional care and support. Its promoters say it combines accommodation, personalised care and a community environment.
Its approach rests on the belief that professional elderly care should support families rather than replace them.
Speaking at the event, Makinde reportedly commended Sobowale for using her influence and resources to give back to society. He also disclosed plans to improve infrastructure around the facility, including extending the road leading to the home and installing solar-powered streetlights to improve access and security.
Several figures from the entertainment industry were at the launch, including filmmakers and actors Kunle Afolayan and Femi Adebayo, as well as veteran actor Adebayo Salami, popularly known as Oga Bello. A video of actor Ibrahim Chatta kneeling to greet Salami at the event has been circulating on social media.
Sobowale was also visibly emotional when her daughter paid a heartfelt tribute to her on stage, praising her vision, determination and compassion.
The launch has drawn wide attention online. Many Nigerians see it as a welcome step for elderly welfare, at a time when conversations about specialised care for the country’s ageing population are growing.
