NAFDAC Discovers Lagos Facility Used to Store Bottles for Counterfeit Alcohol
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered an alleged counterfeit alcoholic beverage operation at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex, where empty branded bottles and other materials were reportedly kept for the production and packaging of fake drinks.
The discovery followed an enforcement operation carried out by the agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate after receiving intelligence about suspected illegal activities within the complex.
During the raid, officials reportedly discovered more than 20 illegal stores allegedly used for counterfeiting alcoholic beverages, repackaging expired drinks and storing prohibited imported products.
NAFDAC said some suspects were found blending counterfeit versions of popular alcoholic beverage brands, while others were allegedly involved in making expired or unsafe drinks appear suitable for resale.
The agency disclosed that two suspects were arrested during the operation, while the recovered products and materials were evacuated.
The value of the seized items was estimated at more than ₦2 billion.
The agency warned that counterfeit and adulterated alcoholic beverages could pose serious health risks to consumers, particularly when expired or unsafe products are relabelled and returned to the market.
NAFDAC urged Nigerians to exercise caution when purchasing alcoholic drinks, patronise trusted vendors and report suspected cases of illegal manufacturing, repackaging or distribution of regulated products.
The agency reiterated its commitment to tackling counterfeit products and protecting public health through sustained enforcement operations.
