First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu Advocates More Support For Farmers, Reduction In Food Waste To Boost Food Security
Nigeria First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for increased support for farmers, reduced food waste and adoption of sustainable agricultural practices to strengthen the country food security.
The First Lady made the call in commemoration of World Food Day, emphasizing the need for collective action to ensure that every Nigerian has access to nutritious and affordable food.
According to her, farmers remain the backbone of the nation food system and deserve greater encouragement through access to inputs, funding, training and modern farming techniques.
She noted that empowering farmers, especially women and smallholder farmers, would boost productivity and help address challenges of hunger and malnutrition.
Senator Tinubu also stressed the importance of reducing food waste at household, market and institutional levels, noting that wastage contributes to food insecurity and economic losses. She urged Nigerians to adopt responsible consumption habits and promote preservation methods that extend shelf life of farm produce.
She further highlighted the need for sustainable agricultural practices that protect the environment while ensuring long term food production, calling on relevant stakeholders, including government agencies, private sector and civil society, to collaborate in building resilient food systems.
The First Lady reaffirmed her commitment to initiatives that support agriculture and improve livelihoods, stating that food security remains a critical pillar for national development and wellbeing.
Stakeholders have described the message as timely, given the current global concerns over rising food prices, climate change impact and the need to strengthen local food production to meet growing demand.
World Food Day is celebrated annually to raise awareness on hunger, promote healthy diets and encourage actions that ensure food security for all.
