Tragedy Averted as Ethanol Tanker Falls in Lagos

A major disaster was averted after a truck carrying 33,000 litres of ethanol toppled at the Second Rainbow Bridge in the Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos State.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency confirmed that no one was hurt in the incident.

The FOTON truck, with registration number APP 346 YC, fell while the driver was trying to negotiate a turn on the bridge. Preliminary findings pointed to speeding as the cause, which led the vehicle’s turntable to detach and land on the roundabout, blocking the entire stretch of road.

Emergency responders acted quickly after recognising the high risk of fire or explosion from the volatile chemical. The Eagle Response Team cordoned off the area, controlled the crowd and managed traffic, while the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and Federal Fire Service sprayed chemical foam on the tanker and surrounding area to suppress fumes.

Police officers and the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency also helped secure the scene. Through coordinated efforts, a serious incident was prevented and the road was later cleared.

In a separate case, emergency teams rescued traffic at Oke Koto in Agege after a Dangote cement truck climbed a road divider and became stuck due to reckless driving.

The truck was removed with heavy-duty equipment and towed away, with no injuries reported. Officials urged motorists to obey speed limits, especially when transporting hazardous materials.
