Nasarawa Adopts Federal Health Strategy to Tackle Climate Change Risks
The Nasarawa State Government has adopted the Federal Government’s climate and health strategy as part of efforts to strengthen the state’s healthcare system against the growing effects of climate change.
State officials said the initiative is aimed at improving preparedness for climate-related health challenges, including disease outbreaks, heat-related illnesses, flooding and other environmental threats that affect public health.
The government noted that climate change continues to pose significant risks to communities, particularly vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women and the elderly, making it necessary to integrate climate considerations into health planning and service delivery.
According to officials, the adoption of the strategy will support efforts to build a more resilient healthcare system capable of responding effectively to emergencies linked to changing weather patterns and environmental conditions.
The plan includes measures to strengthen disease surveillance, improve emergency response mechanisms, enhance public awareness and promote collaboration among relevant government agencies and stakeholders.
Authorities said the initiative aligns with broader national efforts to address the health impacts of climate change and improve the capacity of health institutions to respond to emerging challenges.
The state government also emphasized the importance of preventive healthcare, environmental sustainability and community engagement in reducing the effects of climate-related health risks.
Health experts have repeatedly warned that climate change could increase the spread of certain diseases, worsen food and water insecurity and place additional pressure on healthcare systems if proactive measures are not taken.
Officials expressed confidence that the adoption of the strategy will help strengthen public health outcomes, improve resilience and support sustainable development across the state.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to working with federal agencies, development partners and local communities to ensure effective implementation of the programme and better protection of residents from climate-related health threats.
