The Niger State Government has appointed retired Justice Mohammed as chairman of the commission established to investigate the deaths of 37 detainees in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The commission was constituted to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths, which sparked public concern and demands for accountability.

According to the state government, the panel has been tasked with conducting a thorough and independent investigation into the incident and recommending measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The commission is expected to examine the conditions under which the detainees were held, review available evidence and hear testimonies from relevant individuals and institutions connected to the case.

Government officials said the investigation would be transparent and aimed at uncovering the facts behind the deaths.

The panel will also assess whether established procedures and regulations were followed by officials responsible for the custody and welfare of the detainees.

The deaths of the 37 individuals triggered widespread reactions from residents, civil society groups and other stakeholders, leading to calls for a comprehensive inquiry.
