₦200 Tricycle Levy Dispute Escalates Into Deadly Clash in Ogun Community
Residents of Ikola, Ogun State, have recounted how a dispute over a ₦200 levy reportedly collected from commercial tricycle operators escalated into a clash involving Hausa and Yoruba residents, leaving one Yoruba man dead.
The residents said the confrontation intensified before police officers intervened, dispersing the crowd and restoring calm in the community.
They also described the situation after the clash, particularly the demolition of structures located beneath a power line where some Hausa residents had been living.
According to the residents, the demolition went beyond what they had anticipated, with several homes and personal properties reportedly pulled down.
They said the exercise left some affected residents without shelter, with some allegedly stranded after losing their homes and belongings.
The residents’ accounts centred on the ₦200 collection as the issue that triggered the confrontation, while the subsequent demolition added to the hardship faced by some members of the community.
