Senator Shehu Sani Condemns Diversion of Defence Budgets to Non-Essential Projects

Former Senator Shehu Sani has expressed strong disapproval of the Nigerian security apparatus’s practice of diverting defence budgets to build shopping malls, hotels, and universities.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday night, Senator Sani emphasized that every penny allocated to defence and security should be utilized solely for defending the nation against insurgents and terrorists.

He argued that it is unacceptable for the security agencies to use defence funds to construct non-essential projects such as shopping malls, plazas, and hotels for the National Association of Navy and military wives, while personnel on the battlefield face shortages of equipment and food.

“Defence and security funds should be used exclusively for defence purposes, not for building plazas, hotels, or universities,” he said.

Senator Sani lamented that almost all security agencies in Nigeria have invested in markets, plazas, and shopping malls, rather than focusing on equipping and supporting those on the frontlines.

He urged the Nigerian government to intensify its efforts to combat insecurity by adopting more sophisticated and effective strategies.

The former senator also acknowledged that the war against terrorism is a global problem that requires a sustained and collective effort.

He warned that the fight against terrorism cannot be won overnight, citing the examples of neighboring countries such as Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, which are also grappling with similar security challenges.

“We have talked extensively about insecurity, but it’s time for action. Our actions as a nation have not been sufficient to eradicate terrorism. We need to step up our efforts and recognize that this is a long-term battle that requires patience, persistence, and a well-coordinated approach,” Senator Sani said.

He emphasized that the Nigerian government must prioritize the allocation of defence budgets to ensure that resources are utilized effectively to combat terrorism and insecurity.
