Wike Bans Car Racing in Abuja Residential Areas

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has directed traffic authorities to stop car racing in residential neighbourhoods across Abuja. He said the activity poses a serious danger to residents and other road users.

Wike issued the directive after the issue was raised during an interview on Monday. He noted that no formal complaint had previously been submitted to his office, but he promised to take immediate action through the FCT Traffic Management Department.

The minister acknowledged that some motorists may be using the smooth roads to showcase the quality of the capital’s infrastructure. However, he stressed that public safety must come first and that individual rights should not endanger the lives of others.

Wike advised car racing enthusiasts to restrict such activities to designated locations approved for motorsports. He clarified that the ban applies only to residential areas and does not extend to highways.

The FCT Administration is expected to increase patrols and work with law enforcement agencies to enforce the directive. Officials say the move is aimed at protecting lives and maintaining peace in residential communities.
