The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) at the Federal High Court in Lagos over its alleged failure to account for N211 trillion in missing oil revenues.

Joined as respondents in the suit filed by SERAP counsel Kolawole Oluwadare and Andrew Nwankwo are the NNPCL Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, and the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN).

SERAP is seeking an order of mandamus compelling the NNPCL to disclose full account details, location, and management of the missing crude oil revenues, which were allegedly unaccounted for between 2017 and 2023.

In the legal filings, SERAP contended that “the failure of NNPCL to account for and explain the whereabouts of the public funds is a grave violation of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 (as amended), the Freedom of Information Act, and international human rights obligations.”

The advocacy organization further prayed the court to direct President Bola Tinubu’s administration to recover the unremitted funds and ensure all persons suspected of involvement in the missing crude oil proceeds are prosecuted according to the law.
