The Nigerian Communications Commission says traditional telecom regulations are outdated and cannot cope with today’s fast-changing digital world. Regulators across Africa must update their approaches to handle new technologies like artificial intelligence, satellite services, cloud computing, and digital infrastructure.

Executive Commissioner Rimini Makama made the call during a regulators’ roundtable in Abuja. She noted that markets are now more complex, and decisions should rely on data and market intelligence rather than old methods.

“The old regulatory approaches were built for a simpler time. They are no longer enough,” she said.

Makama explained that regulators now have access to large amounts of data on service quality, consumer complaints, and market trends. The real task is using this information to make smarter, more transparent decisions that protect consumers and promote fair competition.

The NCC has built a system that brings together different data sources to support better policymaking. Makama urged African regulators to collaborate more, share experiences, and develop common ways to verify information and focus on consumer needs.

Executive Vice-Chairman Dr Aminu Maida added that regulators face similar challenges despite operating in different countries. He called for stronger partnerships to tackle issues like cybersecurity, investment, and emerging technologies.

The discussions highlight the need for Africa to adapt quickly to stay relevant in the global digital economy.
