Andy Burnham will officially become the United Kingdom’s next prime minister on Monday. The former mayor of Greater Manchester, nicknamed the “King of the North,” won the Labour Party leadership unopposed after Keir Starmer stepped down.

He will be the 59th person to hold the position and the seventh in the past 10 years.

Burnham is expected to meet with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace to accept the invitation to form a government. He will then head to 10 Downing Street to deliver his first speech as prime minister and begin appointing his cabinet.

The entire transition is expected to happen quickly within a single day.

The new leader has promised to focus on making life more affordable and reducing differences between regions. Known for his straightforward style, Burnham plans to address economic challenges and speak for all parts of the UK, including Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

One early decision may involve placing Thames Water under public control. No general election is required right now. Labour still holds a majority in parliament, so Burnham takes over automatically. The next national vote is not due until 2029.

Many see Burnham’s rise as a significant shift in British politics. His background as a regional champion brings fresh energy to Westminster. Supporters hope he can unite the country and deliver on long-standing promises of fairness and better opportunities for ordinary people.
