National Guard Deploys Black Hawks to Rescue Over 200 Stranded Campers in Missouri Flash Floods

The Missouri Army National Guard utilized Black Hawk helicopters to evacuate more than 200 children and staff members from a remote summer camp after torrential rainfall and severe flash flooding washed out local roads and cut off access to the facility.

The dramatic airlift took place at Camp Taum Sauk in Reynolds County, located in southeastern Missouri, following a continuous succession of severe thunderstorms that dumped six to twelve inches of rain across the region.

The stranded campers and counselors were flown safely to a nearby elementary school to be reunited with their families, prompting camp officials to publicly express deep gratitude for the emergency teams who secured the community’s safety.

The high-stakes aerial evacuation was part of a larger, state-wide emergency response as rising waters swamped highly popular recreational and campground areas. At the nearby Bearcat Getaway campground along the Black River, emergency personnel rescued approximately 20 individuals who had climbed onto a building to escape the floodwaters shortly before the structure collapsed under the immense weight and constant pressure of the current.

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe declared a state of emergency and deployed search and rescue teams, confirming that hundreds of people had been saved from rooftops, trees, and stranded vehicles. While no fatalities have been recorded, a woman remains missing after her home was swept from its foundation, and local authorities are warning residents to remain alert as the Black River continues to rise toward a record-breaking crest of 28 feet.
