Spain Brush Aside Austria to Reach World Cup Round of 16
Spain cruised into the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a commanding 3-0 victory over Austria at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, continuing their commanding run through the tournament without conceding a single goal so far in the knockout rounds.
Mikel Oyarzabal broke the deadlock in the 36th minute, turning home a well-placed cross from Marc Cucurella after Spain had spent the opening exchanges dominating possession and territory. The goal came after a string of near misses, including a disallowed Cucurella effort and an Álex Baena free kick that crashed off the crossbar, as La Roja pressed relentlessly against a resilient Austrian backline.
Spain doubled their advantage in the 66th minute through right-back Pedro Porro, who arrived unmarked at the back post to convert a cross from Baena. Oyarzabal then completed his brace late on, adding a third goal to cap a dominant display and underline Spain’s ruthless edge in front of goal.
Austria, who had reached the knockout stage for the first time since 1954 after finishing second in Group J behind Argentina, pushed hard for a way back into the contest, with Marcel Sabitzer twice picking out dangerous crosses that narrowly evaded Austrian headers, but Ralf Rangnick’s side could not find a breakthrough despite making four substitutions in the second half.
The win extends Spain’s remarkable defensive record at the tournament, having now gone the entire competition so far without conceding, a feat matched by only Mexico among the remaining teams.
Luis de la Fuente’s side, considered among the favourites to lift the trophy, will now await the winner of the Portugal-Croatia tie for their place in the quarter-finals, as the round of 32 phase draws to a close.
