Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has cautioned the government against treating critics and journalists as threats to national security.

His warning came in response to the recent detention of activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore. Obi expressed concern over what he described as a growing pattern of intolerance toward dissenting voices.

Obi argued that silencing critics does not solve Nigeria’s problems but rather deepens them. He noted that constructive criticism is essential for any democracy and that journalists play a vital role in holding power accountable. He urged authorities to engage with critics through dialogue rather than through arrests and intimidation.

The former Anambra State governor also called on security agencies to operate within the bounds of the law. He stressed that due process must be followed in all cases, including Sowore’s detention. Obi maintained that no Nigerian should be punished simply for expressing opinions about governance.

Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters, was reportedly detained by security operatives over the weekend. His arrest has drawn widespread condemnation from civil society groups and opposition figures. The authorities have yet to officially comment on the reasons for his detention.

Obi’s statement has added to the growing chorus demanding Sowore’s release. He called on the government to respect the rights of all citizens, regardless of their political views. He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and speak out against any form of oppression.
