Nigeria’s Fish Farming Sector Struggles Due to Poor Standards

Nigeria’s fish farming industry is facing serious challenges because of weak standards in seed production and fish feed. Experts say these problems are stopping the country from producing enough fish to meet local needs.

Many fish farmers are getting discouraged and leaving the business because of low harvests and high costs.

The main issue starts with poor quality fish seeds, also known as fingerlings. Without proper control over the type and health of these young fish, farmers cannot predict how much they will harvest at the end. This uncertainty makes it risky for people to invest money and time in fish farming. In other countries, farmers can easily know the origin and quality of their seeds, but this is not common in Nigeria.

Another big problem is the low quality of locally produced fish feed. Most farmers depend on imported ingredients, which have become very expensive due to rising exchange rates. This increases the overall cost of raising fish and reduces profits. Research centres have not done enough work over the years to create better local solutions for these problems.

Experts are calling for closer cooperation between government agencies, universities, and research institutes. They want certified systems for producing good fish seeds and more use of local materials for making affordable feed. With better breeds, fish can grow faster and reach market size in shorter time, helping farmers earn more.

Improving standards in the fish sector is important for food security and the economy. Nigeria still imports a lot of fish even though it has the natural resources to produce plenty. If these issues are addressed, the country can become stronger in fish farming and reduce dependence on foreign supplies. Many hope that quick action will support farmers and create more opportunities in this important industry.
