Curaçao Makes History as Smallest Nation to Reach World Cup Finals

Curaçao is celebrating a historic achievement after officially being recognised by Guinness World Records as the smallest country by population to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.

The Caribbean island received its certificate from the record-keeping organisation in Houston, USA, with football federation president Gilbert Martina accepting the honour. This remarkable feat comes shortly after the team played their first-ever match in football’s biggest tournament.

The island nation, home to just 156,115 people at the time of qualification, broke the previous record set by Iceland, which had a population of around 350,000 when they qualified for the 2018 World Cup. Under the guidance of experienced Dutch coach Dick Advocaat, the team topped their CONCACAF qualifying group with an unbeaten record of three wins and three draws. Their historic qualification was sealed with a goalless draw against Jamaica on November 19, 2025.

This achievement represents a true fairytale story in world football, as the “Blue Wave” defied all expectations to compete alongside the sport’s giants.

Their success demonstrates that determination and team spirit can overcome the disadvantages of limited population and resources. It serves as a powerful reminder that in football, anything is possible with the right mindset and commitment.

The team made their World Cup debut on Sunday, June 14, where they faced a more established footballing nation and suffered a 7-1 defeat. However, the scoreline did little to dampen the spirits of the players or their proud supporters back home.

For the people of Curaçao, simply seeing their national team take the field on football’s greatest stage was already a monumental victory.

The record-breaking achievement has captured the hearts of football fans globally, inspiring other small nations to dream big. Regardless of how their tournament campaign concludes, Curaçao has already secured their place in football history. Their journey stands as a testament to the beautiful game’s power to unite and inspire, proving that size truly does not determine a nation’s ability to compete at the highest level.
