First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Gives N100m Grant to 2,000 Benue Women Traders

The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu has announced a N100 million grant for 2,000 petty traders in Benue State.

She made this known on Tuesday during the launch of a new Community Information and Technology Centre in Ihugh, Vandeikya Local Government Area. The grant will provide N50 million to 1,000 women in Vandeikya and another N50 million to 1,000 in Makurdi.

Mrs Tinubu explained that the money is meant to serve as start-up capital or to help women recapitalise their existing businesses. She noted that the initiative is designed to empower women economically, especially those engaged in petty trading.

The First Lady also highlighted that ICT knowledge helps women access new opportunities and enhances educational prospects for young people.

During her visit, the First Lady inaugurated a new ICT centre in Ihugh, which she named after Louis Aluor. Benue now has four such centres, with 15 others already established across states like Abia, Rivers, Delta, Edo, and the Federal Capital Territory. The centres are equipped with computers to help bridge the digital gap across the country.

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State described the ICT centre as a transformational facility that will boost entrepreneurship and support small businesses. He assured that his government will provide start-up funds and ensure steady power and internet connectivity. Earlier in the day, the First Lady also inaugurated an 11.5-kilometre road in Makurdi, with one of the roads named after her.

The N100 million grant and the new ICT centre are part of the First Lady’s broader efforts to support women and improve digital access. Through the Renewed Hope Initiative, the projects aim to create lasting economic and educational benefits for communities. The empowerment programme has been welcomed as a significant boost for women traders in the state.
