Democracy Day: Uba Sani Grants Clemency to 97 Kaduna Inmates, Announces Reintegration Support
Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has granted clemency to 97 inmates of the Kaduna Correctional Centre as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
The governor also announced cash grants and vocational training opportunities for the beneficiaries to support their reintegration into society after release.
Speaking during a ceremony at the Kaduna Correctional Centre on Friday, Sani said the gesture was intended to reflect the values of justice, compassion, freedom and democratic governance that define the June 12 struggle and Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
According to the governor, the exercise was carried out under the constitutional Prerogative of Mercy following recommendations by the Kaduna State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, which reviewed the cases of eligible inmates.
He explained that the clemency package comprised outright release of some inmates, commutation of sentences for others, and payment of fines for qualified beneficiaries.
Sani noted that beyond securing the freedom of the inmates, the state government was committed to ensuring their successful reintegration into society through empowerment initiatives designed to help them become productive citizens.
The governor said the provision of financial support and vocational training opportunities was aimed at reducing the challenges often faced by ex-inmates and preventing a return to criminal activities.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to justice sector reforms, rehabilitation and social inclusion, stressing that the correctional system should focus not only on punishment but also on reforming and rebuilding lives
The clemency exercise formed part of activities commemorating the 2026 Democracy Day celebration and underscores the Kaduna State Government’s efforts to promote rehabilitation, restorative justice and second chances for deserving inmates.
