Voting for Peter Obi Could Aid Tinubu’s Re-election Bid, Says Kenneth Okonkwo
Former Labour Party presidential campaign spokesman, Kenneth Okonkwo, has warned that votes for former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election could indirectly strengthen President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s chances of re-election.
Okonkwo, who has since left the Labour Party and is now aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the claim during a recent television interview, where he discussed the ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of the next general election.
According to him, a divided opposition would play into the hands of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), arguing that splitting votes among opposition candidates would make it easier for President Tinubu to secure another term in office.
He stressed that only a united opposition front could pose a serious challenge to the incumbent administration, warning that multiple strong opposition candidates contesting separately would weaken their overall electoral strength.
Okonkwo also criticized internal disagreements within opposition ranks, insisting that political stakeholders seeking to unseat the ruling party must be willing to engage in consensus-building and competitive primary processes rather than fragmentation.
His comments come amid growing political maneuvering among opposition figures and emerging alliances ahead of the 2027 presidential election, as parties and key politicians reposition themselves for what is expected to be a highly contested race.
The remarks have continued to generate debate among political supporters and analysts, particularly within Labour Party and opposition circles, as discussions intensify over the most effective strategy to challenge the APC-led federal government in the next election cycle.
