Delta Police Arrest Three Suspected Drug Traffickers, Recover Large Consignment of Hard Drugs

The Delta State Police Command have arrested three suspected drug traffickers and recovered large quantities of illicit substances during separate intelligence-led operations conducted across the state.

The arrests were announced in a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, who said the operations were part of ongoing efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks and curb drug-related crimes in Delta State.

According to the statement, operatives of the Special Enquiry Unit intercepted a Mercedes truck with registration number KRV 837 ZN on June 3 at the First Niger Bridge Head, inward Asaba, while conducting stop-and-search operations.

The vehicle was driven by 47-year-old Obinna Nwosu of Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, who reportedly informed officers that he was transporting plumbing materials.

However, a thorough search of the truck allegedly uncovered a large quantity of controlled substances concealed within the vehicle.

Police said the exhibits recovered included 13,000 sachets of 100mg Tramadol, 100 sachets of 225mg Tramadol, 100 sachets of Swinol, 300 sachets of Rohypnol, 60 sachets of Codeine Phosphate tablets and 100 tablets of Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), commonly known as “Molly.”

“The suspect has been taken into custody and investigations aimed at identifying other persons connected to the illicit consignment are ongoing,” the statement said.

In a separate operation carried out the same day, operatives of the Command Anti-Vice Squad (CAVS) raided a suspected drug distribution centre in Alegbo Community, Owa-Alero, located in Ika North East Local Government Area.

The operation led to the arrest of two suspects identified as Henry Edward and Okwudili Kingsley.

Police said preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects were allegedly involved in operating a local drug distribution network within the community.

During the raid, officers recovered five gallons of fermented cannabis mixture popularly known as “Monkey Tail,” along with other suspected illicit substances.

“The suspects and exhibits are in police custody while further investigations are ongoing,” the Command stated.

Reacting to the arrests, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, commended the operatives for their professionalism and dedication in carrying out the operations.

He reiterated the Command’s commitment to sustaining aggressive action against drug trafficking and other forms of organised crime across the state.

Oyeniyi warned that the proliferation of illicit drugs continues to fuel criminal activities, including cultism, armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent offences.

He urged residents to support law enforcement agencies by providing timely and credible information that could aid crime prevention and detection.

The police also appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant, stressing that community cooperation remains essential in the fight against drug trafficking and other criminal networks.
