Eight-month Pregnant Woman Seeks Divorce Confirmation in Nasarawa Court
An eight-month pregnant housewife, Halima Yusuf, has approached the Upper Area Court in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, seeking judicial confirmation of her divorce from her husband, Isah, whom she accused of assault and neglect.
Yusuf, in a petition filed before the court, alleged that her husband had repeatedly beaten her and failed to fulfil his marital obligations.
The petitioner told the court that their marriage was contracted under Sharia Islamic law and that Isah had neglected his responsibilities by failing to provide basic necessities, including food, clothing and healthcare.
According to her, the situation forced her to leave her matrimonial home and return to her parents’ residence in Mararaba, where she is currently living despite being eight months pregnant.
“We got married under the Sharia Islamic law. Isah does not provide food, clothing or healthcare for me,” she told the court.
Yusuf urged the court to formally confirm the divorce and compel her husband to assume responsibility for her pregnancy and related welfare needs.
Trial Judge, Mohammed Yakubu adjourned the matter until June 11 for hearing.
The case is expected to come up for further proceedings on the adjourned date.
