Oyo Students Take WASSCE Practical Exam in Darkness

Students in Oyo State faced a tough situation during their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) Agricultural Science practical on Thursday, June 4th.

Many had to write their exams in complete darkness due to power outage. This unfortunate event has sparked concerns about the readiness of examination centres and the challenges students face in public schools.

The practical exam, which is an important part of the WASSCE, requires students to carry out hands-on tasks in agriculture. Without electricity, candidates struggled to see clearly and complete their work properly. Reports showed students sitting at desks with little or no light, relying on whatever natural light was available or mobile phone torches in some cases.

This incident has raised questions about the power supply situation in schools across Oyo State.

Many parents and education stakeholders expressed disappointment that such a key national examination could not be supported with steady electricity. Power failures during exams add unnecessary stress to students who are already under pressure to perform well.

Education officials and examination bodies are expected to look into the matter to prevent similar problems in future exams. Reliable power supply remains a major issue in many parts of Nigeria, especially during important academic activities. Students in Oyo are hopeful that authorities will take steps to improve conditions for the remaining papers.

This event highlights the bigger challenges in Nigeria’s education system. For the affected students, the experience serves as a reminder of the need for better infrastructure.

As they continue with other subjects in the WASSCE, many are calling for urgent action to ensure that power outages do not affect their performance again.
