Sanwo-Olu Inaugurates Committee for National Intermediate Games

Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has inaugurated the Local Organising Committee for the Maiden National Intermediate Games (NIG) Lagos 2026, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to youth development through sports.

The governor disclosed this in a statement shared on his official Facebook account following a courtesy visit by members of the Main Organising Committee of the National Intermediate Games at Lagos House, Marina.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the inauguration of the committee marks a significant milestone in preparations for the sporting event, which is expected to provide a platform for young athletes to showcase their talents and contribute to sports development across the country.

He noted that the competition would create opportunities for youth participation in sports while helping to nurture the next generation of athletes.

The governor pledged the full support of the Lagos State Government towards the successful hosting of the games, expressing confidence in the committee’s ability to deliver a memorable tournament.

“Today, I received members of the Main Organising Committee of the Maiden National Intermediate Games (NIG) Lagos 2026 on a courtesy visit at Lagos House, Marina.

“I also officially inaugurated the Local Organising Committee for the Games. This is an important step in our preparations to host a competition that will create opportunities for young athletes and promote sports development.

“We are fully committed to making NIG Lagos 2026 a success and this team has my support as we work together to deliver an exceptional tournament.

“Great opportunities lie ahead for our young athletes, and we are ready to show the nation what Lagos can achieve,” the governor stated.

The National Intermediate Games is expected to serve as a developmental platform for young athletes, providing exposure, competition and pathways for talent discovery while strengthening grassroots sports across Nigeria.

Stakeholders have continued to emphasize the role of sports in youth empowerment, social inclusion and national development, with state governments increasingly investing in programmes aimed at identifying and nurturing emerging talents.
