Spreading Fake Banditry News Will Attract Severe Punishment, Osun Police Warns Residents
The Osun State Police Command have issued a stern warning to residents of the state against fabricating and spreading false information regarding banditry and security threats, stating that anyone caught doing so will face the full wrath of the law.
The warning follows a recent surge in unverified social media reports and rumours alleging bandit attacks and kidnappings across various communities in the state.
According to the police, these false narratives have created unnecessary panic, disrupted daily business activities, and heightened tension among citizens.
In a statement released by the command’s Public Relations Officer, the police emphasized that while they encourage citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements, there is a sharp line between whistleblowing and deliberate misinformation. The command noted that spreading fake news undermines the efforts of security agencies and diverts critical resources away from actual policing duties.
Moving forward, the police command stated it has activated its cybercrime and intelligence units to track down the originators and sharers of such malicious content.
Security agencies have reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace in Osun State, urging residents to verify information through official channels before sharing it online.
