Kogi Govt Suspends Echane Festival

The Kogi State Government has ordered the immediate suspension of the Echane Festival in Ebiraland, citing security concerns.

In a statement released by the state authorities, the government said the decision was taken to prevent a potential breakdown of law and order in parts of Kogi Central Senatorial District. The festival, which is a significant cultural event among the Ebira people, often draws large crowds and widespread participation across communities.

However, officials noted that intelligence reports indicated that this year’s celebration could pose threats to public peace and safety. Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo approved the suspension as part of efforts to safeguard lives and property.

The government emphasized that while it recognizes the cultural value of traditional festivals, security considerations must take precedence. Security agencies in the state have been directed to enforce the suspension strictly.

The government also warned that individuals or groups who defy the directive by organizing or participating in the festival will face legal consequences.

Residents, traditional rulers, and community leaders have been urged to cooperate with authorities and support measures aimed at maintaining peace and stability in the state.
