NIS Warns Nigerians Against Rising Fraudulent Migration, Human Trafficking Schemes

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has warned Nigerians about an increasing wave of fraudulent migration schemes and illegal cross-border movements being promoted by criminal networks across the country.

In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by its Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, the service said many unsuspecting citizens, especially young people, are being targeted with fake promises of jobs, education opportunities and better living conditions abroad.

According to the agency, such schemes often end in exploitation, including forced labour and human trafficking, with victims frequently stranded or subjected to abuse outside the country.

The NIS stressed that it is illegal for any Nigerian to travel out of the country without valid travel documents such as a passport and visa, warning that bypassing official immigration procedures exposes individuals to serious risks.

It added that no legitimate travel arrangement avoids approved border processes or recognised immigration channels.

The service also cautioned against unsolicited offers of sponsorship, travel assistance or relocation opportunities from unknown individuals or agents, describing them as common tactics used by trafficking syndicates.

Nigerians were advised to verify all overseas job or travel offers through official government channels and avoid engaging with persons promoting irregular migration.

The immigration authority further urged parents, guardians and community leaders to sensitise young people on the dangers associated with illegal migration and human trafficking.

It encouraged the public to report suspicious activities to the nearest immigration office or through its official communication platforms, including verified social media handles and contact lines.

The NIS reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening border security and protecting Nigerians from exploitation linked to transnational criminal networks.
