Drama, Farewells and History on a Thrilling Premier League Final Day
The 2025-26 Premier League season concluded in breathtaking fashion on Sunday as all ten matches kicked off simultaneously, delivering drama across the table from title celebrations and a historic individual record to gut-wrenching relegation and emotional farewells.
Arsenal lifted the Premier League trophy after victory at Crystal Palace, their first title in 22 years, while Bruno Fernandes wrote himself into the history books at Brighton and West Ham suffered the agony of relegation on a day English football will not quickly forget.
Arsenal crowned their title-winning campaign with a win at Selhurst Park, with Gabriel Jesus among the scorers as the Gunners celebrated in south London before captain Martin Odegaard lifted the trophy.
The title, Arsenal’s first since 2003-04, marked the culmination of a dominant season in which they finished clear at the summit. At the Etihad, meanwhile, Pep Guardiola said farewell to Manchester City after a decade of extraordinary success, departing with a defeat as Aston Villa won 2-1 thanks to a Ollie Watkins brace in the second half.
The result was a bittersweet end to a managerial era widely considered one of the greatest in Premier League history. Villa’s victory confirmed their fourth-place finish, with their Europa League triumph earlier in the week already having secured Champions League football.
Mohamed Salah’s final Anfield appearance ended in a 1-1 draw against Brentford, a result that left Liverpool in fifth place and denied them the chance to finish above Aston Villa. Andy Robertson also bade farewell alongside Salah in an emotional occasion that marked the end of an era for Arne Slot’s side. Manchester United, meanwhile, produced the afternoon’s standout performance, thrashing Brighton 3-0 as Fernandes broke the all-time single-season Premier League assist record with his 21st of the campaign, surpassing the mark of 20 jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. Fernandes also scored United’s third to cap a remarkable personal season that earned him the Player of the Season award.
At the bottom, the drama was as intense as anywhere. Tottenham survived relegation by beating Everton 1-0 through Joao Palhinha’s scrappy first-half goal, a result that sent West Ham down to the Championship in their place. West Ham won their own game against Leeds but it was not enough, their inferior goal difference rendering the victory meaningless as Roberto De Zerbi’s Spurs held on. The result ends West Ham’s 14-year stay in the top flight and represents one of the most significant relegations in recent Premier League memory. Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers had already been confirmed down prior to the final day.
In the European places, the final standings confirmed Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Liverpool in the Champions League. Bournemouth secured Europa League football, to be joined by Sunderland after a positive final day, while Brighton’s Conference League spot was confirmed as their season ended with the heavy defeat to United. Chelsea missed out on Europe entirely following a loss to Sunderland, a damaging conclusion to a turbulent campaign . With the World Cup now just weeks away, the curtain has come down on a Premier League season that delivered compelling theatre from first to last.
