Real Madrid Confirm Alaba Exit as Contract Expires

Real Madrid have confirmed that Austrian defender, David Alaba will leave the club at the end of the season when his contract expires, bringing to a close a five-year spell at the Santiago Bernabéu that was ultimately defined as much by injury misfortune as by the glittering silverware he helped the club accumulate.

Alaba joined Real Madrid on a free transfer from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2021 and quickly established himself as a commanding presence at the heart of their defence. However, his time in the Spanish capital was derailed by two serious injuries a cruciate ligament rupture in late 2023 that kept him out of action for over a year, followed by a meniscus tear that disrupted much of the 2025 campaign. As a result, the 33-year-old managed just 15 competitive appearances this season, having featured in fewer than 400 minutes of football across the entire campaign.

Despite his diminishing influence on the pitch, Alaba’s contribution to one of the most successful periods in Real Madrid’s recent history is beyond question. During his time at the club, the Austrian won two La Liga titles and two UEFA Champions League trophies, cementing his reputation as one of Europe’s most decorated defenders. The club, in acknowledging his departure, expressed its gratitude and affection for a player they described as part of a team that shone during one of the most triumphant chapters in their storied history.

Real Madrid had opted against opening talks over a contract extension, with the club keen to restructure their squad and ease their wage bill ahead of the new season. Alaba has been among the club’s top earners, and freeing up his salary will provide new head coach Xabi Alonso with greater financial flexibility to invest in younger defensive options. The Austrian, for his part, had been determined to see out his contract and bow out on his own terms rather than seek an early exit.

His next destination remains unclear, with several clubs reported to have already made contact regarding his availability as a free agent. A move to Major League Soccer has been mentioned in some quarters, though those close to the player have indicated he is not currently considering the United States as an option. Whatever lies ahead, Alaba departs the Bernabéu as a champion one whose legacy at Real Madrid, despite the cruel interruptions of injury, remains firmly intact.
