TCN Urges Communities to Protect Power Infrastructure from Vandalism
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has called on communities across the country to join hands in protecting power installations from vandals. The company made this appeal during a sensitisation programme held at Itele community in Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State. Officials stressed that vandalism of power facilities continues to disrupt electricity supply and waste resources that could be used for development.
The General Manager of TCN Benin Region, Charles Iwuamadi, represented by Matthew Ariyibi, explained that people living near transmission lines are often the first to notice suspicious activities. He urged residents to report any case of tampering with towers, conductors, or other equipment immediately.
According to him, such collaboration will help maintain stable power supply and reduce repair costs.
TCN also warned against building houses or structures under high-tension power lines. Officials highlighted the serious dangers involved, including the risk of electric shock, radiation, and even death. They advised communities to stay away from these areas and avoid any illegal activities around power infrastructure.
The company has strengthened its efforts by working with local vigilantes and traditional rulers to safeguard installations. During the engagement, community leaders promised to support TCN in protecting the facilities. They described the sensitisation as a welcome move that will help improve electricity supply in the area.
This campaign highlights the important role communities can play in solving Nigeria’s power challenges. If residents take ownership of these national assets, it could lead to fewer cases of vandalism and better power supply across the country. TCN promised to continue such outreach programmes in other communities.
