Presidency Denies Plans to Change Nigeria’s Name, Abolish Sharia
The Presidency has dismissed viral reports claiming that President Bola Tinubu plans to rename Nigeria the “United States of Nigeria” and scrap Sharia Law in the northern region.
The statement described the story as fake news meant to mislead Nigerians and cause unnecessary tension in the country.
Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, said the claims are the handiwork of desperate politicians trying to create disaffection and heat up the polity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He stressed that there is no truth in the report, including the alleged bill code-named “Project True Federation.”
The Presidency made it clear that President Tinubu has no intention of sending any such bill to the National Assembly. It explained that constitutional amendments require a two-thirds majority approval in both chambers of the National Assembly and the support of at least 24 State Houses of Assembly. Such major changes cannot be done easily or on a whim.
President Tinubu remains focused on strengthening the economy and delivering more benefits to Nigerians through his current reforms. The government urged citizens to ignore divisive fake stories that are likely to increase as political campaigns begin.
Nigerians have been advised to be cautious about information they consume and share, especially during this period. The clarification from Bayo Onanuga is expected to stop the spread of the misleading report and promote national unity.
