Eulogies as Pa Adebanjo Exits in Glory
Tributes have poured in for the late Pa Ayo Adebanjo, a renowned statesman and champion of true federalism, who passed away on February 14, 2025, at the age of 96. Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, described him as a paragon of integrity, justice, and a tireless advocate for democratic ideals.
At a funeral service held in Adebanjo’s honor at St. Phillip Anglican Church in Ogun State, Governor Abiodun praised the late leader’s unwavering commitment to the principles of democracy and his unrelenting opposition to military dictatorship. He noted that Adebanjo’s contributions to the country’s democratic governance were immeasurable and that his legacy would continue to inspire future generations.
The funeral service was attended by a host of dignitaries, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi. Also in attendance were the Governors of Lagos and Oyo States, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Seyi Makinde, as well as former governors of Ogun State, Gbenga Daniel and Senator Ibikunle Amosun.
Adebanjo, a lawyer and politician, was a close associate of the late sage Obafemi Awolowo and played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s political landscape. He was a strong advocate for regional integration, restructuring, and devolution of powers, and his leadership of the Pan Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, helped to revitalize the organization and promote democratic values.
In his sermon, the Archbishop of Lagos Ecclesiastical Province of the Anglican Church, Bishop Michael Fape, urged Nigerians to emulate Adebanjo’s selfless and purpose-driven life. He noted that the late leader’s commitment to justice, equity, and fairness was an inspiration to all and that his legacy would continue to serve as a guiding light for the country’s leaders.
Bishop Fape emphasized the importance of living a life of purpose and selflessness, citing the example of Jesus Christ, who came to the world to declare God’s purpose of saving mankind. He encouraged leaders at all levels of government to follow Adebanjo’s example and work towards the greatness of the country, rather than personal interests.
As Nigeria continues to navigate its democratic journey, the life and legacy of Pa Ayo Adebanjo serve as a reminder of the importance of courage, conviction, and integrity in leadership. His contributions to the country’s democratic governance and his tireless advocacy for true federalism will be remembered for generations to come.
