Chelsea Appoint Xabi Alonso as Manager on Four-Year Contract

Chelsea Football Club has officially announced the appointment of former Liverpool and Real Madrid star Xabi Alonso as the new manager of the men’s first team on a four-year contract.

The 44-year-old Spanish tactician will officially assume his duties at Stamford Bridge on July 1, 2026, ahead of the 2026/2027 pre-season.

Alonso succeeds Liam Rosenior, who was relieved of his duties in April following a string of poor performances, and will take over from interim head coach Calum McFarlane.

The appointment comes at a turbulent period for the West London club, following a disappointing domestic campaign that saw the Blues finish ninth in the Premier League and lose 1-0 to Manchester City in the FA Cup final, likely missing out on European football next season.

The Chelsea hierarchy highlighted Alonso’s broad elite-level experience, leadership attributes, and distinct game model as the core factors behind the decision. Notably, Alonso is expected to operate with broader managerial authority over squad building and recruitment than some of his recent predecessors under the BlueCo ownership.

Expressing his pride upon the announcement, Alonso stated: “Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club. From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.”

Alonso, who enjoyed a highly decorated playing career, rose to global managerial prominence during the 2023/2024 season when he guided Bayer Leverkusen to an unprecedented, unbeaten domestic double to secure their first-ever Bundesliga title. After a subsequent brief stint at Real Madrid that ended in January, he returns to England, where he previously spent five successful years playing for Liverpool.
