Kano Assembly Raises the Alarm Over Tomato Pest Destroying Farms
The Kano State House of Assembly has expressed serious worry over the outbreak of a destructive tomato pest known as Tuta Absoluta. This pest is currently ravaging farms across many parts of the state, threatening the livelihoods of farmers.
The alarm was raised during a plenary session when a committee presented its findings on the situation.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture, Alhaji Ahmed Ibrahim, explained that the pest attacks tomato plants at every stage of growth. It destroys leaves, stems, flowers, and fruits, leading to heavy losses for farmers.
The infestation has spread to several key tomato-producing areas including Bagwai, Shanono, Rogo, Tofa, Bunkure, Kura, and others.
Lawmakers noted that the pest outbreak could cause a shortage of tomatoes in the market and push up prices across the country. This would affect not only farmers in Kano but also consumers nationwide. The assembly called on the state government to take quick action to control the spread and support affected farmers.
Among the suggestions made are the supply of insecticides, pheromone traps, and protective equipment. The committee also recommended sending extension workers to teach farmers better ways to manage the pest and working closely with local governments to stop the sale of fake agrochemicals.
This development highlights the challenges facing agriculture in Nigeria, where pests can quickly destroy crops and create economic problems. The Kano Assembly urged immediate support for farmers and stronger efforts to protect food production in the state. Residents and farmers are now waiting to see how the government will respond to this urgent threat.
