Lagos Govt Provides Free Rides for Students in Surulere Under Gbaja Ride Initiative

Lagos State Government has announced a revolutionary initiative to provide free transportation to and from school for all secondary school students in Surulere, Lagos State.
The announcement was made by the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, CFR, during the launch of “Gbaja Ride” at a ceremony held in Surulere today.
The “Gbaja Ride” initiative is a partnership between the Lagos State Government and the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) aimed at empowering students, supporting families, and driving positive change in the community. The program is designed to ease the financial burden on families and provide a safe and reliable means of transportation for students to and from school.
According to Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, “The Gbaja Ride initiative is a bold step towards a brighter future for our children. By providing free transportation, we are not only supporting families but also empowering our students to focus on their education without the worry of how to get to school. This is a great move for our local government, and we are committed to making a positive impact on the lives of our residents.”
The “Gbaja Ride” program will provide a fleet of buses that will operate on designated routes, picking up students from their homes and dropping them off at their respective schools. The buses will be equipped with state-of-the-art safety features, including GPS tracking, CCTV cameras, and trained drivers.
The initiative is expected to benefit over 10,000 secondary school students in Surulere, with plans to expand to other areas of Lagos State in the future. The program will also create jobs for drivers, mechanics, and other support staff, contributing to the local economy.
The “Gbaja Ride” launch event was attended by dignitaries, including the Lagos State Commissioner for Education, the Chairman of Surulere Local Government, and representatives from LAMATA. The event featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a tour of the buses, and a demonstration of the program’s operational systems.
In his closing remarks, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila emphasized the importance of education and the role that transportation plays in ensuring that students have access to quality education. “Education is the key to unlocking the potential of our children, and we must do everything in our power to support them. The Gbaja Ride initiative is a testament to our commitment to the well-being and success of our students, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on our community.”
The “Gbaja Ride” program is set to commence operations immediately, with buses scheduled to start picking up students from their homes and dropping them off at school on Monday, May 6, 2025.
